I was all over getting the 24-120 when it was announced because 24-105s have been my staple for work since canon launched the 24-105L IS about 2005 ( anything faster needed , its Primes) and have the Sigma 24-105 F4 ART on the D850 more than the 24-70 F2.8 but I`m loving the compactness and lightness of the Z7/24-70 rig over the D850 / 24-105
The 24-70 is an S line lens so it's Nikon's "higher quality" type of lens with better optical performance. It is also faster with a wider aperture of f2.8 which is significantly better for low light and I guess for sports on a cloudy day - though the limited zoom range wouldn't make it my lens of choice for sports unles you're right on top of the action.
These lenses shine at f5.6-f8 and give a new benchmark for "kit" lenses. After seeing this video I feel completely comfortable trading in the 24-70mm f4 then add the 24-200mm and 20mm f1.8 for a two lens kit.
The Nikon Nikkor Z 28-75mm F2.8 will be available early next year at an MSRP of $1199.95. Alongside the new zoom, Nikon is also teasing the development of a super tele 800mm F6.3 prime. The Z 800mm F6.3 VR S is set to be the first native Z-mount lens to feature PF (phase fresnel) optics, which Nikon has used before in its popular AF-S 300mm F4
Border performance is not bad wide open but does not really profit much when stopping down. Same story at 35mm, albeit with only little vignetting: Unremarkables at 35mm: Infinity shots with Nikon Nikkor 24-120/4.0G VR on a D800. 35mm, f4.0, 100 ISO; Below: 100% crops from the main image at different apertures.
Nikon's new Z 24-120mm F4 S is a standard zoom lens for the full-frame mirrorless Z mount, intended to offer a more versatile and cheaper alternative to the high-end Z 24-70mm F2.8 S. Providing decent medium telephoto reach, good close focusing capabilities and a lighter, more portable form factor, the Z 24-120mm F4 S should make an ideal carry

By coincidence I just bought this afternoon, from Craigs List, the Sigma version of the 24-105 (for $550) and although I haven't taken more than a handful of shots, so far it is impressiveno vignetting at 24mm, razor sharp in the center A7rII with MC-11 adapter.
